Recently there has been much worry about the Zika Virus. There are many people that may not know about the disease, and that can cause unneeded fear.

As far as the history of the disease goes, Zika is a disease that was first discovered in certain countries in Africa. After the disease hit Africa, it later moved on to Asia. In the past years the disease has also been found in many countries in Latin America. Brazil has been one of the countries that has received a huge influx of Zika cases. Even though Zika is not a disease that is contagious, it is a disease that could possibly have adverse effects. These adverse effects include microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Guillain-Barré syndrome is a very serious disease that affects the nervous system and the autoimmune system.

There is really no treatment for the Zika virus, and all that a person can really do is let the disease run its course. It is generally a virus that last from 3 to 12 days. Symptoms of the disease include the following: rash, body aches, fatigue, fever, and headaches. The virus is not contagious and it can only be transmitted from the Zika carrying mosquito to the individual that it bites. An individual that is diagnosed with the Zika virus can take inflammatory medications, or they can take pain killers if they would like. Individuals that are diagnosed with Zika should avoid aspirin or any medications that contain aspirin, because these contain anticoagulant that can cause bleeding.

The best things that an individual can do to try to prevent the Zika virus is to try to avoid mosquito bites. Mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus are attracted to standing water, so it is best to not have any pooled water anywhere in the home.
